Respectability is an immersive exploration to re-contextualize the narrative of oppression of Black femmes in the United States. The materials chosen are a juxtaposition of symbols of femininity as well as tools of violence. The process draws influence from Black Folk Magic and the tradition of ritual and spirituality as tools to subvert oppressive forces. These pieces were made to address the unique experience of existing at the intersection of patriarchal and racial violence.
This installation is a larger project, called Urban Naturaliste, which focuses on creating healing spaces for people of color and designing ritual spaces. Respectability was created during a three month studio residency through Center on Contemporary Art (COCA) in Seattle.
